Thought questions are intended to inspire introspection, discussion, and debate, less to discover a right answer and more to test an idea’s durability from differing angles. The goal is to provoke thought and refine articulation.
“Thought Questions” are well suited for teachers, educators, youth groups, socials, group discussions, family gatherings, personal improvement, and more.

To break down the question, the second part is about wanting to be somewhere else, which can be understood as a state of dissatisfaction, envy, or whatever negative emotion speaks to a desire to just get out of here. While this may turn into a path to betterment, it’s most recognized as a burning to escape the present. Always wanting to be somewhere that isn’t here usually refers to someone who can’t settle, who doesn’t buckle down for the long haul, who misses what’s right in front of him.

Wanting to be somewhere else may also speak to ambition, a desire to do more, be worth more, succeed more, often stemming from what could be a healthy drive and focus. Wanting to be somewhere else in a good way can lead to action and improvement.

Which loops back to the beginning, where the focus is on an individual’s character over his current status or station. To say, what kind of person someone wants to be should be the main focus, and everything else, while important in some measure, is peripheral.

Granted, some people will never be happy wherever they are, and some bring their own sunshine wherever they go. The latter leans much more into the “who you want to be” part, as it achieves a state of being that’s adaptable, dependable, and balanced, no matter life’s currents.

One other factor to consider, character is significantly more under someone’s control than anything else in life. Where someone wants to be may be a good goal, but it’s also possible to remain untouched or far away for years, even a lifetime, through no specific fault of the individual. Moreover, getting to where you want to be doesn’t guarantee staying there, nor does it assure satisfaction or contentment. When SomeOne else is running the show, getting to wherever you think you want to be, in any sense of the expression, is not as much in an individual’s hands as we’d like to think.

However, what sort of person you want to be is entirely within your province, because it’s a choice of attitude and reaction. We are the only ones who can do anything about our character, to coarsen or refine regardless of where we currently are. While some environments are less challenging than others, and some friends better suited to this pursuit than others, at the end of the day, who we make ourselves into is entirely our decision.

Considering all that life has to hold, it’s much better to expend effort and concentrate focus on what we can control than waste it on what we can’t.
