You think it's a focus problem (it's biology)

It’s 3pm. You see the link your co-worker sent you last week.

You saved it for later because you were tired. Now it’s later.

Open the link, stare at the screen. Let your eyes move down but nothing goes in. Again. Again. Try focusing more. Try harder. Get frustrated. Feel stupid. Close the tab.

Is this how you want to read for the rest of your life?

Each time you give up is evidence that you’re not cut out for this. You’re not one of the smart ones. You’re not able to focus enough.

You feel like the idiot at the party when everyone is talking about things you should know. The job you applied for went to the person who knew what to talk about during the interview.

You used to think you were smart. Used to.

But here’s what nobody told you.

Your brain wasn’t designed to read.

It was built to listen.

Reading is exhausting for your brain. To take symbols on a page and convert them to language, over and over? That’s a lot of energy.

That’s why you get so tired when you read. Your brain is an energy saving expert. When it sees a block of text, it wants to run. This isn’t your fault. This is biology.

How many times have you been told to “just focus more”? How many times has it actually worked?

Your teachers told you at school. It didn’t work.

Your parents told you at home. It didn’t work.

You tell yourself to this day. It. Still. Doesn’t. Work...

Telling someone to focus more is like whipping a horse that’s at max speed and already bleeding. Focus was never the problem.

For years I would beat myself up, telling myself to focus more. Until May 2025 I discovered a way to take advantage of this biology instead of working against it.

If you’re tired of whipping a horse that’s already bleeding then stay tuned. I’m going to be sharing everything that took me from advanced learning support to reading effortlessly. You’ll stop blaming yourself and be able to do the same.
