There are people who seem to learn from everything.
Not just books. Podcasts on a commute. YouTube rabbit holes at midnight. A throwaway article someone texted them three weeks ago. They absorb it all, and then months later they’re citing the specific idea, connecting it to something else, building on it in a way that makes you think they must have studied this properly.
I used to watch those people and assume it was a hardware difference. Some retrieval mechanism I didn’t have. Their brains just worked differently.
So I tried volume. More podcasts. More articles. More everything.
It didn’t help.
I didn’t used to be someone who picks things up easily. I was placed in Advanced Learning Support at five. At sixteen my Head of Year told me I wasn’t smart enough to take the A-levels I wanted. I told her it was my life and she couldn’t decide that for me. She let me through. But the message had already landed: some people are built for learning and some aren’t. I was in the second group.
But I’ve spent the last decade figuring out why I used to retain almost nothing. The answer isn’t intelligence or memory or reading speed. It’s what you do with content after you’ve consumed it, and whether you’ve created any conditions for it to stick.
Now, people ask me how I do it.
Someone will reference a podcast and I’ll say I’ve been reading about the same thing. Or I’ll connect something from a book I finished six months ago to a conversation we’re having. And they’ll ask how I manage to hold onto things when everyone else feels like it goes in one ear and out the other.
I don’t have a great memory. I still forget people’s names at parties. I still start podcasts I’ll never finish.
What I have is a method.
These methods aren’t mine. Researchers have understood the underlying mechanics for decades. What’s strange is that nobody taught them to us. And... the first one takes about two minutes.
So maybe you’re someone who listens to podcasts every morning and can’t recall a single episode by lunch. Maybe you’ve taken courses that left you with a certificate and nothing else. Maybe you’ve watched a hundred videos on a subject and still feel like a beginner.
The same problem. The same solution.
Three methods for actually learning from whatever you consume. They work across articles, podcasts, videos, books, conversations. They run from beginner to advanced. The first takes two minutes. The third takes a habit built over time.
But before any of them, one concept
Call it your conversion rate. The percentage of what you consume that actually becomes knowledge you can use. Not knowledge you’ve been exposed to. Not knowledge you’d recognise if someone prompted you. Knowledge you can draw on, build with, apply.
For most people, that number is low. Much lower than they think.
Not because they’re consuming the wrong things. Because consuming something and learning something are two completely different activities, and almost everything about how we consume is designed for the first one. Audio is built to play. Video is built to stream. Articles are built to be scrolled. None of it was designed to help you remember.
That’s not a conspiracy. It’s just not what they were built for.
Your conversion rate isn’t fixed. It’s almost entirely determined by what you do in the twenty minutes after you consume something.
That’s what the three methods below are about.
After consuming anything, close it.
Don’t re-read your notes. Don’t replay the section. Close it, and write down everything you remember. Not what you thought was good. Not what you highlighted. Everything you can pull back.
Use whatever you have nearby. Notes app, scrap of paper, back of an envelope. The medium doesn’t matter. The act of retrieval is the point.
You’ll remember less than you expect. That discomfort is exactly what makes it work.
In 1885, a German psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus spent years memorising syllable lists and testing his own recall at intervals. What he found has been replicated hundreds of times: without active engagement, we lose roughly 70% of what we’ve consumed within 24 hours. Not because we weren’t paying attention. Because the brain doesn’t store what it hasn’t been asked to retrieve.
Storage isn’t the bottleneck. Retrieval is.
When you write down what you remember from a podcast or an article, you’re doing what cognitive science calls retrieval practice. Actively trying to recall something produces 40 to 60% better long-term retention than passively reviewing it. The effort of attempting to remember, even when you fail, creates a stronger memory trace than any amount of re-reading or re-listening. Roediger and Karpicke ran a study on this in 2006: one group studied a passage four times, another group studied it once and then tried to recall it three times. A week later, the recall group remembered 60% of the material. The study group remembered 40%. Same time investment, different result.
Musicians get this intuitively. When a professional is learning a new piece, they don’t listen to a recording and hope the melody sinks in. They play it. They attempt to recall it from memory. They practise it at half speed, actively reaching for the notes, not passively following along. Listening to it forty more times does almost nothing by comparison.
The Two-Minute Test is the equivalent of playing the piece rather than listening to it.
After finishing anything you actually want to retain: close the source, write down everything you can remember. Every idea, every argument, every example you can pull back. You’ll get better at it quickly. The things you write down will stick.
The Two-Minute Test captures a memory. The Format Bridge tests whether you actually understood what you consumed.
One question, after any piece of content: can you explain the main idea in a different format from the one you received it in?
You heard it in a podcast. Can you write a paragraph about it?
You read it in an article. Can you explain it out loud, in your own words?
You watched a video. Can you sketch the argument on a page without going back?
This sounds simple. It isn’t.
The moment you try to switch formats, you find out exactly what you understood versus what you just followed. Following an argument is much easier than reconstructing it. When content is in front of you, your brain rides along on the structure it’s been given. The moment the source is gone, you’re on your own. That’s when you find out what actually went in.
Psychologists call this elaborative encoding. Memories that are constructed by the learner (produced rather than received) are dramatically more durable than memories formed by passive consumption. The generation effect is one of the most consistent findings in learning science. Studies find that generating information produces better retention than reading it, with generated items recalled around 22% better on average.
The reason: when you produce an explanation, your brain has to draw on everything it understood, connect it to existing knowledge, and build a representation of the idea from scratch. That’s harder than following. And harder, here, means better. Difficulty during encoding is what makes a memory stick.
One more thing. Different formats surface different aspects of an idea. An article’s written structure reveals the logical spine. A podcast captures the emotional stakes, the speaker’s conviction in real time. A video can show a system visually in a way text can’t. When you take an idea from one format and express it in another, you often discover something about it that wasn’t available to you the first time.
Different formats activate different neural encoding channels. Moving an idea across formats moves it across those channels. Each time you do that, you build another retrieval route.
After consuming anything: try to explain the main idea in a different format. Heard it? Write it. Read it? Say it out loud. Watched it? Draw the argument. One paragraph, or two minutes of speaking into your phone, or a single rough sketch. The explanation doesn’t need to be good. The act of generating it is what does the work.
The first two methods help you capture and understand individual ideas. The third is what turns individual ideas into actual knowledge.
After pulling back what you remember and expressing the main idea in a different form, ask one more question: where have I encountered this before?
Not from the same source. From somewhere else. A different format, a different domain, a different author.
The same principle showing up in two completely different places is usually a signal you’ve touched something real. And the act of finding that connection, noticing that the negotiation book and the podcast on evolutionary psychology are making the same argument about status and perceived scarcity, does something neither piece can do alone. It gives you a framework that holds.
Cognitive scientists call this elaborative interrogation. A memory connected to at least one other existing memory is dramatically more stable than an isolated one. Every connection you build between a new idea and something you already know creates another retrieval path. The brain doesn’t store memories the way a hard drive stores files. It reconstructs them during retrieval, drawing on related knowledge. When you connect a new idea to three things you already understand, you’ve given your brain four retrieval paths instead of one.
The Cross-Pollination takes this further: you’re looking across formats and domains deliberately. Not “this podcast reminded me of another podcast.” More like: “this podcast about habit formation is making the same argument as that article on athletic training, which is the same point Aristotle was making about virtue.” Cross-domain connections aren’t coincidences. They’re evidence of principles. And principles found across multiple domains are nearly impossible to forget.
Scholars who worked in the Library of Alexandria annotated their scrolls in the margins. Not summaries. Connections. Notes that said, in effect: “this argument appears in Stoic philosophy as well” or “Plato made the same point in different terms.” They were doing manually, with papyrus and ink, what we now call networked note-taking. Knowledge held in isolation is fragile. Knowledge that connects is resilient.
Athletes do something similar when reviewing film. A basketball coach doesn’t watch game tape just to confirm what happened. They watch to find the pattern: why did that defensive assignment break down? Where did it appear earlier in the same game? Did it happen three weeks ago in a different game? The specific event is less useful than the principle it reveals. The principle only becomes visible when you look across events.
The Cross-Pollination is harder than the first two methods. You need existing material before the connections become available. This is why it’s method three.
But once you’ve been running the Two-Minute Test and the Format Bridge for a while, you start accumulating material. At that point, the Cross-Pollination is what makes it compound. You start noticing that every book on decision-making echoes the same four principles in different clothes. You realise the podcast on business strategy and the article on cognitive psychology are pointing at the same underlying mechanics. You stop consuming isolated pieces and start building a map.
After consuming something: ask one question. Where have I encountered this idea before, in a different format or from a completely different domain? If you find one connection, write it down. One sentence is enough. The act of generating it builds the link, and the link is what makes both ideas more retrievable.
Pick the ones that fit the moment.
The blank-page dump. Close the source immediately after consuming anything. Write every idea you can pull back before checking anything.
The format switch. “Can I say this in a different form from how I received it?” Heard it on a podcast, write a paragraph. Read it in an article, explain it out loud. Watched a video, draw the argument.
The connection question. “Where have I seen this pattern before, in a completely different context?” One question, every time you encounter an idea you actually want to keep.
The why prompt. “Why is this true?” Ask it of any claim that seems important. One sentence is enough, and it doesn’t have to be right. The act of generating an explanation does the work regardless of accuracy.
The retrieval reminder. A note, a calendar entry, a simple reminder: “try to recall [topic]” at a specific future interval. Not to review the source. Just to recall what you remember, from scratch, before going back to check.
The domain bridge. “Is this principle appearing in another field I know something about?” Cross-domain connections are harder to forget than within-domain ones. If something holds in cognitive science and in music and in sports coaching, it’s probably fundamental.
You don’t need all of these every time. A podcast you’re half-listening to while cooking doesn’t warrant a full retrieval session. But for the things you actually want to hold onto, the ideas that should compound rather than disappear into the background noise of everything you’ve consumed, these are the tools.
I’m still not someone who picks up things quickly. I still have to read more slowly than most people. I still forget things I haven’t deliberately worked to retain.
What changed is I stopped measuring my learning by how much I consumed and started measuring it by how much converted.
Volume was never the problem. I was consuming plenty. The conversion rate was the problem. And the conversion rate is almost entirely about the twenty minutes after you finish something, not the hour you spent consuming it.
The two-minute test takes two minutes. The format bridge takes switching contexts once. The cross-pollination takes one question.
What takes longer is trusting that it’s worth doing. That closing the podcast and writing down what you remember matters more than immediately starting the next one. That the discomfort of not remembering as much as you expected is the mechanism, not a failure.
Most people I know are one podcast away from feeling informed and one blank page away from realising they’re not.
