My kids go back to school this week, and it feels wrong to say this, but, I’m so glad. This summer I learned how reliant I am on the routine of the school year, and while the break from the routine was initially a relief, it began to wear on me.
As an introvert, I depend on a lot of alone time to refuel. Three kids at home this summer left little room for that, and my tank feels a little low.
That combined with the (lack of) schedule, became the perfect recipe for summer blues. For whatever reason, I failed to plan much structure for the summer. So, in hopes to be better prepared next summer, while recognizing it won’t be perfect, I’m going to use this simple practice of reflection today.
What was draining?
What was life giving?
The immediate moments when a season is wrapping up are the perfect time to reflect on it. I’m sure next spring will roll around and I’ll forget most of the hard parts and just remember the fun and lovely things. I’ll pull out my notes around April or May of next year and plan accordingly.
I know this will not solve everything, but maybe if I can soften (or solve!) one pain point, I can create a little ease somewhere else.
