i like january.
it is clean and crisp and obvious.
the skies are quiet, be that with snow or
strong air. no smells linger long enough to
distract, save the occasional sturdy whiff from
a wood fire. i have a friend who reminds me
of january. her colours are stark, honest; her presence
carves an empty space you can curl into and be
held, comfort. january’s colour is that of a fresh
bruise, violet and blue and purple. some will tell you
that violet is a made up colour, which makes me laugh,
as i filter through all the other made up names
given to hues of light, even the white of this
thick frost has shifted since i sat down to write.
colour is a happening, no
thing is fixed. keep moving with
it, keep watch. soon it will be
time again for coffee.
