I did not have time to put together the thoughtful, deeply considered piece I had planned. I had a lot of things I was thinking about. I just didn’t have time to think about how to write them down.
Instead, I was busy at the Waco Independent Film Festival with my short film, SAVERIO, which has now been making the festival rounds for about 16 months and looks like it will keep going for another four or five. Which is exciting, because SAVERIO is now Oscar-qualified, and I’m also working on the feature version.
But the best part of Waco was that I got to bring my 21-year-old daughter along.
She got to see what this whole film festival circuit is actually like, not just the “glamorous” part, because, let’s be honest, there are times you screen in a hotel ballroom with weird sound and folding chairs. But Waco was a truly an exceptional festival that gave us an incredible experience.
I was interviewed by six or seven different press outlets on opening night, then had another round of interviews a few days later. My daughter got to watch me do a Q&A, meet other filmmakers, and socialize with people who, like me, apparently think it’s perfectly normal to spend months schlepping a film around the country.
She was terrific. Social, easy, a good filmgoer, and I loved having her there.
The other thing that kept me busy, and why I couldn’t quite pull together an essay this week, is that I’ve been helping my star and fellow filmmaker friend, Quincy Cho, launch her very first short film as a writer, director, and producer. I came on as an associate producer, and I am so proud of her and excited to support her.
I spent all day yesterday on set and I’ll be there again tomorrow, and I’m sure I’ll help with a few decisions in post-production, because as she knows all too well, I have an opinion about everything.
Being on set is my happy place. I feel like I’m at my best there. It may have taken me a little longer in life to find my way to it, but now that I’ve arrived, it’s pretty clear I have a lot to contribute, and a lot more I want to do.
I want to keep directing. I want to keep producing. I want to keep showing up for other filmmakers. I want to keep learning, making, and being part of this crazy, exhilarating, occasionally sleep-deprived world.

So maybe this week’s “quickie” is actually the essay. Something about what you thought you were supposed to be doing isn’t nearly as important as the thing you can’t stop doing. And sometimes it means admitting that you didn’t write the essay because you were too busy living it.
