We’ve talked about white paint —the good ones, the tricky ones, the ones that make you lose your mind trying to make a decision. The colors I reach for most aren’t actually white, they just pretend to be.
I think of them as metamorphic colors—those barely-there tints that read neutral until the light shifts and suddenly you realize there’s something else going on. We’ve talked about this with clothes. Not quite color in its truest form but something more..
My goal is to find a true color that is just diluted enough. Metamorphic colors usually have three characteristics:
a color you can’t quite name - they need more than one word to describe it
slightly weathered and chalky
quieter than you think you want
I’m talking about things you won’t find under the ‘true color name’ on the paint palette. These are buried in the neutrals area on the palette and the secret is to think about the undertones:
A green that reads like stone.
A pink that passes for plaster.
A blue that slips to green during the day and back again by evening.
Gray that feels like it has been warmed by the sun.
Grounded, but fresh and interesting.
