The kids are away at sleepaway camp so we parents snuck off to the Big Island for what my friend called “DINK Week,” in which we PRETEND we are dual income/no kids just for the week. It slaps! It hits! Whatever slang you want to use, I’m into it.
I used to spend at least half — if not more — of my time on the road, and not always for work. When we lived in Seoul, we capitalized on being near so many destinations in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands that we’d sneak in getaways every month. So while I’m feeling wistful for my former life, I thought I’d share a few tried-and-true rules for the road…
You’ll be sorry you didn’t. You are not losing if you don’t bargain too hard. The vendor probably needs the money, and buying something is often a more efficient way of helping people than giving to charity.
The valuable security advice that any fixers or security folks have offered international correspondents is that you should never, ever wear flip-flops to demonstrations. (Also, if things get gnarly at a street protest, get in a doorway.) Fixers have also warned us that foreign ministries often do not let you into their consulate or embassy buildings in flip flops, so make sure you have closed-toe shoe options.
