Adventures without running

My year got off to a good start, running-wise.

I spent Christmas and New Year travelling around New Zealand on a big, once-in-a-lifetime sort of trip. We were outside pretty much every waking moment, and doing as much exploring on two feet as possible. Having been injured through the autumn and DNSing a couple of races I was really excited about, it was just so nice to be able to take advantage of everything New Zealand had to offer.

I think that’s what running is all about for me. A medal at the end of a race is nice but really it’s just about feeling fit enough to say yes to a spur of the moment adventure, and then un-broken enough to do another long run the next day.

When we landed back in the UK on the 8th of January, I was feeling fitter than I had in a while. I couldn’t seem to shake off the jet lag though, struggling to make it through the day without a very long nap. That all made much more sense when, the following week, we found out we were expecting. …
