This week’s Substack is by Tatum Robinson, a Content Marketing Manager at Fair Trade USA. In this piece she discusses raising the bar and why people and the planet belong at the center of how products are made. Today, the impact is palpable. The three stories listed in this piece come directly from actual workers in Fair Trade Certified™ facilities that produce e.l.f. products. They decided where Community Development Funds would go, as well as defined the priorities. They measured what mattered. This is certification made human. Worker-led investments strengthening families, neighborhoods, and futures. All of these initiatives go far beyond the factory floor.

How Fair Trade Certification Supports Workers and Communities
e.l.f. set a new standard when they became the first in the beauty industry to source from a Fair Trade Certified™ facility in 2022. Its legacy-creating decision rippled outward, encouraging more brands to source responsibly. The teams at both Fair Trade USA and e.l.f. worked closely to build factory standards for cosmetics that benefit the workers behind your favorite products while protecting our home planet. Now, we’re seeing the impact of these strong, worker-first standards in action.
The following three stories are real accounts from workers at the Fair Trade Certified™ facilities that produce e.l.f. products, sharing how Fair Trade Community Development Funds have made positive changes for their families and communities:

1. Supporting Working Families Through Summer Childcare
For many working parents, summer break can bring an added challenge: finding a safe, enriching place for their children while school is out.
Workers at one Fair Trade Certified™ facility used Fair Trade Community Development Funds to create a two-week summer childcare program for employees’ children. The program served 21 children and provided structured activities including homework support, reading time, first aid and fire safety training, healthy meals and snacks, and workplace visits that helped children learn more about their parents’ jobs.
The program earned an overall satisfaction score of 9.89 out of 10 from participating families, and every parent surveyed said they would participate again. One parent shared:
“When children are happy, parents are at ease.”
2. Bringing Mid-Autumn Festival Joy to Seniors
At another Fair Trade Certified™ facility, workers chose to use Community Development Funds to support elderly residents living in a local care facility during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Employees delivered holiday gifts including milk and mooncakes, spent time chatting, and helped clean the living spaces of more than 60 residents. The initiative was designed to promote the traditional value of respecting and caring for older generations while helping seniors feel connected and celebrated during an important holiday.
3. Employees Giving Back Through Blood Donation
When workers learned about a local blood donation drive, they knew they wanted to show up for their community.
Supported by the Premium Management Committee, the volunteers donated blood to help people in need and were recognized with flowers, commemorative cards, and care packages.
One employee shared, “I am very glad to participate in this blood donation activity and give my own small love.”
The project reflected workers’ shared desire to make a positive contribution to their community and support others through a simple act of service.
Stories like these show the real human impact behind certification, and how powerful strong commitments to people and our planet can be.
