Here’s the 3-step formula behind every top 1% Common App essay we’ve helped write:
Topic + Main Theme + Hidden Theme
1. The Topic
This is your hook. The best topics include some sort of everyday object, moment, or activity/hobby you can view in a new light. Think:
A collection of pressed flowers from every state you’ve visited
A jar of movie ticket stubs going back to middle school
Your borderline-obsessive birdwatching habit
2. The Main Theme (VSPICE)
Anchor your story in one of six core pillars: Vulnerability, Selflessness, Perseverance, Initiative, Curiosity, or Expression.
We built a VSPICE rubric because after reading thousands of essays, we noticed that these core traits are the ones admissions officers consistently say they’re looking for.
These are the core trait that makes your experience relatable.
3. The Hidden Theme
This is the soul of the essay — think specific and unexpected.
Past students have used spikes like autonomy, accountability, or even chaos. It’s the “aha” moment that reveals a side of you no one saw coming!
Here’s how this can play out in action
Topic: settling a chaotic family fight over the last crab leg.
Main (VSPICE) Theme: Selflessness.
Hidden Theme: Humor - using the absurdity of the negotiation to show how they handle high-stress conflict with humor instead of anger.
Topic: organizing 5 a.m. glow-in-the-dark frisbee games, despite being half-deaf.
Main (VSPICE) Theme: Initiative
Hidden Theme: Resilience - turning weakness into strength; instead of centering the hearing loss, the essay shows how vibration and visual cues let them orchestrate the game and lead anyway.
Topic: a worn-out, taped-together pocket Constitution you carry everywhere.
Main (VSPICE) Theme: Vulnerability
Hidden Theme: Adaptability — after her dad calls out her all-or-nothing certainty, she learns to hold the Constitution (and her own beliefs) as something that has to flex and evolve to stay true to its purpose
For Juniors and Sophomores
Application season feels far off, but the best thing you can do now is live a life worth writing about. Skip the resume-padding clubs.
