This is it folks, June saw EVs nab 23.4% of all new cars sales in Australia; that’s pure BEV or battery electric vehicles, not hybrids, not plug in hybrids, pure electric. The Tesla Model Y was Australia’s best selling vehicle with 8,072 deliveries, knocking the Ford Ranger from its top spot, in fact it’s sales were down 4.7%. Things looked even worse for the Toyota Hilux relegated to third place, down 16.5%.

But this is the real news: BYD almost beat Toyota as the most popular car brand in Australia.

Toyota’s market share continues to shrink with 19,124 sales in June, while BYD came in a close second with 18,881 sales, a mere 243 cars in it. This is truly the biggest shake up in the Australian auto market in decades, and it’s just the beginning. It reflects a changing of the guard as legacy auto start paying for their lacklustre embrace of EVs.

YTD in 2025 Toyota enjoyed a comfortable 19.5% market share with 120,978 sales, however YTD in 2026 this has shrunk to 15.7%, with only 95,141 sales. That’s right they sold nearly 26,000 less cars, and that’s despite June recording the highest monthly sales figure ever recorded, with 140,058 deliveries.

What is clear, is that Australians are embracing electric vehicles (and as the oil crisis worsens, and I believe it will) the winners will be the automakers who make that their focus.
