Happy Sunday, lovely readers!
I’m popping into your inbox tonight with the second edition of ~ Dressing Diaries ~ a little mini series here on Substack, where I share the small thoughts, observations, and gentle formulas that have helped me get dressed with more ease over the years. Nothing complicated… just the quiet things that make everyday dressing feel a little more like play. { read my first entry here! }
Tonight, I’m delving into the golden question: what actually makes an outfit interesting?
I was getting dressed the other morning, hopping on one foot trying to wrangle a sock on, when the thought properly arrived: how do I break out of my own well-worn grooves today, and reach for something with a bit more spark in it? Not fancy. Not styled-within-an-inch-of-its-life. Just interesting… the kind of outfit you clock on a stranger crossing the road and think, gosh, look at her, without being able to say exactly why, only that something about the whole arrangement made you look twice.
I don’t think it’s ever the big stuff. It’s not the new coat, still stiff at the shoulders, or the bag that cost more than it should have. It’s smaller than that ~ the details that read as accidental even when they weren’t. A flash of colour where you weren’t expecting one. Two fabrics that have no earthly business being together, paired anyway, and somehow better for it. Lace showing beneath a jumper gone soft and a little bobbled with age, like a secret you’ve let slip without quite meaning to.
So, how do you get more of that uniqueness, without spending another cent on your wardrobe?
Here are the little formulas I keep coming back to. Simple, unglamorous, faintly ridiculous some of them. But they work, especially on the days you need to add a bit of shimmer to an otherwise ordinary outfit.
