E. J.'s MONSTROSITY · E. J.'s MONSTROSITY

Yes, yes, yes, I’m back. We’re going to get back to the weekly schedule, I swear (famous last words?) It seems that inevitably, someone over the course of any given year, I find myself in a perfect storm of work deluge, book promotion/events, travel and/or other overwhelm that wholly derails my best intentions for this newsletter.

Hello again. Thank you for sticking around.

And as it happens, I do have a lot of goodness to share, as one of the big causes for derailment this time has been some real forward momentum for my new release coming September 22, ROOTS & WRATH!

So quickly, some top highlights, and then back to our regular programming of favorite links from recent times, etc.

[Obligatory Taylor Swift August Gif, if salt air and rust on your door is your vibe]

First of all, please mark your calendars: We have a launch event! On Tuesday, September 22, I’ll be at Long Dark House, a new indie bookshop in Alexandria, VA, that is dedicated to horror, scifi, and weird stories of all sorts. (It’s perfect, no?) Details TBD, but expect a 7ish start time.

Which brings me to the pre-order rewards. When you pre-order Roots & Wrath, you not only help me send this novel into the world with its very best start possible, you also get all sorts of goodies, including:

  • Signed, themed bookplate

  • Bookmark, stickers and pin

  • Deleted scenes (and oh boy do I have deleted scenes)

  • Worldbuilding posters about the magical system and high holidays

  • A recorded reading and chat about the book from me

When you order from an indie bookshop or Bookshop.org, you’ll also get entered to win a carefully curated set of 5 witchy, bitchy books that compliment ROOTS & WRATH perfectly. When you order from Long Dark House, you get three entries.

After a wild week of internet outrage, the woman who trademarked the widely used meme “Hot Girls Read,” she rescinded her rights. Welcome back, Hot Girls. This was WEEKS ago at this point, but still felt worth sharing.

Are the Mad Scientist Olympics coming? Cringe.

What AI does to our brains, for three different types of thinkers.

Ottessa Moshfegh wants to write and ending that messes with you (and she is really good at it).

Mother Horror herself, Sadie Hartmann, shares on her life as a constant reader. IDK, felt like maybe you could relate.

This year I’m reading Witchy & Bitchy as a lead-up to my witchy, murdery new release in Fall 2026. Get the reading list here.

PS - When you click on the cover and buy the book I’m reading, not only do we get to read along together and trade notes (@ me!), but you’re also supporting indie bookshops and my writing thanks to the Bookshop.org affiliate program!

Thanks for reading! Check out my books here.

I’m sharing quarterlyish peeks at my works in progress and readerly rambles about what I’m reading and loving.
