Everyone’s favorite astro transit to hate is back— Mercury stations retrograde today, June 29th, at 1:36pm EST. Turning backwards at 26° Cancer, the next four weeks may bring miscommunications, technological hiccups, travel delays, and the sense of moving through molasses. And while all of that surface-level chaos is worth a little anxiety, there is an invitation to spiral inward offered to us during Mercury retrograde. Let’s spend some time thinking about what that invitation actually is.

Mercury Retrograde in Cancer

June 29 - July 23
26° Cancer - 16° Cancer
Cazimi 20° Cancer July 12

No matter which sign Mercury moves through, every retrograde follows the same essential shape: a pre-shadow period where the themes begin to surface, the station retrograde itself, a cazimi at the midpoint, a station direct, and a post-shadow period where everything continues to settle.

While the day Mercury stations retrograde may grab our attention, there is a way to discern the message of the moment, at the center of the transit. The cazimi, or the midway point of the retrograde, leads us into deeper understanding.

The word cazimi comes from the Arabic kasmimi and the Greek ekgardios — both meaning “in the heart of.” Halfway through any retrograde, Mercury meets the Sun in a perfect conjunction, and is plunged into the heart of Sol, purified by his fire. This is usually when a flash of real clarity arrives, like clouds momentarily parting on a stormy day.

Here’s the reframe I keep coming back to: picture Mercury not as a planet glitching, but as a traveler — hooded, head down, descending a narrow path toward a cave that leads underground.

Mercury is psychopomp, the one figure in the Greek pantheon permitted to move freely between the upper world and the underworld. His retrograde isn’t meant to entangle us in a web of frustration, but rather it’s an invitation to follow him down, to retrace, to revise, to retrieve what was left behind in the underworld of memory, words unsaid, and unfinished understanding.

He doesn’t travel this path alone, either. Depending on which planets he meets along the way, the character of the journey shifts — a conjunction with Venus softens the path with beauty and longing, a conjunction with Mars sharpens it with frustration that has nowhere to go. Every retrograde tells its own story, built from whoever Mercury runs into on his way down and back.

Wherever Mercury is retrograding in your own chart, that’s the part of your life currently up for reflection, and retrograde discovery:

1st: identity, appearance, early life
2nd: money, values, possessions
3rd: rituals, community, writing, siblings
4th: home, family, ancestry
5th: creativity, pleasure, children
6th: labor, health, routines
7th: partnership of all kinds
8th: shared resources, grief, secrets
9th: spirituality, culture, divination
10th: legacy, public image
11th: friendship, community
12th: the unconscious, rest, the soul

This time, Mercury is moving through Cancer — the sign of home, memory, and the inner emotional world. Expect old patterns, family dynamics, or memories of home to resurface. The material that’s available for alchemical change is the stuff of the heart, the inner child, and ancestral story. Where will it find you?
