From the Burrow: End of Summer Wrap-Up and Ew David

Elizabeth Harrell · The Greenhouse

We jokingly call our house The Burrow, after the Weasleys’ house in Harry Potter.

It’s small. We’re all piled on top of each other. There are antiques and books and plants everywhere. Something is always being built, painted, moved, or repaired. Nothing matches and things are weird. Also, Kevin is neurotic.

And this morning, we are celebrating.

Or rather, we would be celebrating if we had any energy left.

It’s the first day of school.

Everyone made it to their appropriate destinations. I’m not drinking hooch before 9 a.m and the kitchen is clean-ish.

I am now sitting in my office trying to decide if my brain has enough juice left for my workday.

I did break out a breakfast Diet Coke.

This weekend Gabriel had a birthday party at the loudest most light-flashiest-kid-kingdom in town and there were no injuries, tears, or lost children. There was an interesting moment in the ball-pit as a kid yelled at their mom, “Someone peed in here.” And the mom yelled, “GET OUT DAVID.”

Now, I’m not sure if it actually happened, or if David was just a good spinner of yarns, but it did make me think two things.

  1. Ew, David.

  2. These play places really should be required to have full decontamination units, where upon leaving your child can enter and the lysol-filled-wind whooshes and all the potential ball-pit-urine would be cleansed from their person.

Anyway, the weather is windy and feels just like standing in an open oven.

I’ve cut down watering my garden to every other day, and it’s not very happy with me. But it also doesn’t understand what it’s like to stand outside in a 105-degree heat index while simultaneously being hit with a hormonal hot flash.

But maybe this change in seasons will mean that the house stays somewhat clean during the day and I step on fewer Legos.

Maybe I’ll have time to address the dust and kitchen sticky buildup on my many pottery treasures. Or I could also just ignore the issue until Christmas.

I think we all know what my decision will be.

But until then, it’s quiet in The Burrow.

I’m sad summer is over.

I’m glad summer is over.

I’m pretty sure that’s how you know it was a good one.
