No Zoom meetings or meetings on X this week. I am going to local groups trying to see if some of the local athiest/agnostic/free thought Gays want to do something to push back against anti-Gay Christianity.
My father moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa prior to my last year in High School. I graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 1979. So I sent letters to each Little Libary in the Spirit Lake area. I included a biography of my life before coming out. I am in the Year Book and they can verify that I was there.
My response rate hasn’t been that good. I am less than 10%. I thought that writing places where there is in the news censorship or some sensationalist anti-Gay activity would be the place to mail, but that isn’t working.
I included with the usual mailing the following bio. I am going to be writing little libaries in places I lived before coming out.
Introduction
I have been mailing out copies of “The Gay Teen Path to Success,” to Little Libraries all over the country. I usually pick some place where they are banning Gay books. I decided to write the places where I lived before coming out and where I could have really used this book.
I graduated from Spirit Lake High School in the Spring of 1970. I had started to realize that I liked a guy in my senior high school and desired him. However, I couldn’t make sense of it. I certainly wasn’t able to talk to anyone about it.
I was in a very rural area for my last year in high school. My father had moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa for a job leaving behind Edina, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis.
I went to Iowa State University in Ames majoring in chemical engineering and ancient history. I graduated with five and a half years of credits in four years.
During these four years I became aware that I was attracted to men.
During one summer while in college I worked at Arnold’s Park on West Okoboji Lake. I worked in the pinball arcade making change and selling soft drinks. Two of my brothers worked at the amusement park also. After our shifts were over, we would drive home to our house in the country.
There was an African American guy passing through and we were friendly. He was from Los Angeles. He gave me his address to look him up if I ever visited Los Angeles.
One day he invited me to spend the night at his place and sleep over. I thought it was very likely that spending the night would mean having sex. It was something that I keenly desired. But I said no.
Earlier that summer at a nearby Boys Town, my brother said that they had discovered that some guys were Gay (Not the word they used.) and they were “beating the hell out of them.” I didn’t want to get beaten up and I didn’t want to have to run away and be homeless.
So, I said no.
For months later I thought about what it would have been like to have spent the night with him and whether I had made the right decision.
I had always loved books. While I was a student at Iowa State University, I would stop at bookstores. One day I was at an alternative/left bookstore and on a table, I was astounded to see a Gay newspaper. I made sure not to look at it and remain nonchalant. I did find reasons to look at books in different parts of the bookstore and so in passing the table I could see it out of the corner of my eye.
At the Student Union at Iowa State University, they had a counter in an area wear student would be walking through. I think it was in my senior year that in walking through at that counter there was a student staffing the counter for a Gay student group at our university.
I avoided looking at the student and the counter directly and walked by nonchalantly. I waited 15 minutes and walked by again. Again, walking by nonchalantly and avoiding looking directly at the counter. I didn’t ever stop at the counter. In the future when I was in the Student Union, I would look for the student group, but I never saw them again.
The school year was coming to an end and I would be graduating in about a month or two. All the student academic clubs had booths at the Student Union. I was staffing the history club booth. This cute guy came by and we talked about history, ancient history, Greek mythology and I managed to mention Ganymede somehow. He loved mythology also and gave me his address. I think that it was a dorm. I didn’t try to meet with him. I was so close to graduating in a short time and wasn’t going to risk it.
The school year was drawing to a close and the student newspaper had a notice that the student Gay group would be having one last meeting in the evening before the school year came to an end at a nearby church. I decided to go to the meeting.
The Church was across the street from a small park surrounding Lake Laverne on the campus. Walking along the street on the side across from the church I tried to decide whether to go across the street and to the meeting.
I didn’t want to be seen stopped across the street watching and so I would walk to the end of the block and then loop back on the side walk next to the lake in the dark and then back onto the street from which I could see the church where the meeting was taking place.
Around and around, I walked and finally I resolved to go to the meeting. But just then I saw a lot of people leaving and realized that the meeting was over.
I then went home. In a few weeks I graduated and went to my first job.
I was totally secret as a Gay person in high school and college. I never dated or even thought of it as a possibility.
In the end I have been very successful in life as an engineer and historian. I thought I would share to the next generation of Gays what I think contributed to my success.

To the haters I always reply, “If you are feeling depressed make sure you get help.”
They hate it. Though it comes across as caring, it is asserting that they are unwell mentally, which it is likely they are, and they are somewhat aware.
I don’t argue with them, since that would reward them.
When dealing with anti-Gay people we need to have tactics that get into their heads and psychologically bring them down.
This morning I put the sign back in place. The support is wires that go up into the sign which is plastic. Nothing was done to the books. Not sure what happened.
I check once a day in the evening. I have been meaning to get security cameras. But busy with a lot of things.
With this ruling, apps don’t have to be side loaded. Gays might be able to have apps that the LGBTQXYZ+ moralists would otherwise block through pressure on corporations.

I am going to do a post on Pride bars. Most of them don’t consider the source of their chocolate, but one of the Pride bars made it a point to inform buyers that it was Ugandan chocolate. Uganda has been the leader in mobilizing a pan-African anti-Gay campaign. Is a chocolate from a viciously Gay hating nation “ethically sourced”?

I wrote five vendors who exclusively sell Ecuadorian chocolate suggesting that they have a Pride chocolate bar since Ecuador has positive policies regarding Gays versus the vicious anti-Gay policies in Africa. Four of the letters were to chocolate makers in the United States, and Hoja Verde is in Ecuador.
Goodnow Farms carries a lot of Latin American chocolates. They got a different letter.
I don’t think that the Ecuadorian chocolate makers have considered the market for Pride products or that Ecuador’s Gay friendly policies can be used for selling chocolate. They don’t have to say anything about Africa, they just need to emphasize their nation’s positive social position.
I don’t have to get all of them to pick up the idea. If just one or two start having a Pride chocolate bar, I think others will start think about using their nation’s positive stand toward Gays as part of their marketing. The idea will spread on its own.

The nation of Ecuador is a nation friendly to Gays. I think it would be good to have a chocolate bar for Pride month made of chocolate from Ecuador. Also, for Valentine’s Day, a box of Ecuador single source chocolate would be good.
I did research on the nations that produce chocolate, in North and South America, Africa and Asia.
There are nations in North and South America which are chocolate producers and also, along with chocolate producer Vietnam, have a positive policy towards Gays.
In contrast the African nations which produce chocolate are viciously anti-Gay.
I think people should eat Love chocolate and not Hate chocolate.
Given that Gays are subject to violence in West, Central and East Africa, it is not excessive to call their products blood chocolate. (Note: South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana and Namibia are not counted as anti-Gay nations.)
I hope you consider for Valentine’s Day and for Pride month you consider selling products celebrating that Love is Love, Pride, and talk about the excellent record the Ecuador has regarding Gays.
