An update from the heart.

This is a departure from what I usually write here.

My little brother Oso has been critically ill and hospitalized for the past two weeks, and something happened during this that I want to share.

When he first landed in the hospital, my only thought was: I will handle this. Whatever it takes, however much it costs, it’s my responsibility as his brother. That’s what family does.

But then something unexpected happened. Friends stepped up. People we know, people we don’t, they created a GoFundMe, they shared it, they donated, they prayed. And I realized I was wrong about something.

I thought taking care of my brother meant doing it alone. What I’ve learned over these past days is that taking care of him also means letting people care with us. It means accepting that community isn’t weakness, it’s strength.

I intended to cover this myself. Friends set up this fund without asking me, and once it started, I realized turning it away would mean turning away people who wanted to show up for him. So I’m sharing it, not because I couldn’t handle this alone, but because I’m learning that I don’t have to.

The response has been overwhelming. Genuinely humbling. Watching people show up for someone they care about. Oso might have put a smile on their face in the many times he played music for them or offered a hug. Family showed up without being asked, without fanfare, that’s changed how I see what it means to be a family.

Oso is still fighting his way through recovery. But he’s not fighting alone, and neither am I. That matters more than I can put into words.
