An experienced writer, artist and editor, with 100s of comics and more than 30 book titles to his name. These include graphic novels Manga Shakespeare’s KING LEAR, SKIDMARKS, ROOM FOR LOVE, KID SAVAGE, and the award-winning END OF THE CENTURY CLUB series. His latest is ROMO the WolfBoy, an All Ages character-based series released to great acclaim and newly available in paperback. He’s also part of the UK independents revival, A1 Deadline, and a regular cartoon historian for The New Internationalist (24 episodes to date). His work has been translated into multiple languages. Read him in French, German, Italian, Turkish, Galician Spanish, and even Japanese.

Although I’ve been a professional cartoonist for almost 40 years now, I used to work on staff at Waterstones when times (and more importantly income) got lean - the last occasion being around the turn of the millennium. Ironic for someone who just 3 years prior had been awarded Best Graphic Novel at the UK Comic Art Convention, 1997, for the first volume in his ongoing series The End of the Century Club. But that’s reality for you - like a dose of salts. I trained in Central London at the St Paul’s branch, under the shadow of that famous cathedral, where we seemed to sell the same 7 books daily. Being so close to the City (the capital’s financial district), we did particularly well with Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and Machiavelli’s The Prince, and the section on Hitler and the Nazis was also popular. Then, later, I slaved at the Islington branch on the Green … oh the stories I could tell …

Where was I?

I’ll be dropping in on suspecting comics retailers around the NorthEast and bothering them about ordering in and stocking copies, while trying my best not to look at their bulging back issue sections and definitely not spending any of the money I don’t have. We’ve reached out to alert a few of them in the areas where I knew I’d be but it’s been tough to get an answer out of pretty much anyone. In order to Get Famous it seems I have to actually Be Famous first! It’s a conundrum.

BUT, SUCCESS! On the evening of Saturday 5th September I’ll be at COMICAZI in Boston for a ‘Fireside Chat’, 6-8pm, and very grateful to them for hosting we are and forever shall be.
