Miley Escalates CA14 Feud With FEC Complaint Against Wahab, Alameda County Democrats

—Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley escalated an already bitter CA14 special election fight this week by filing a complaint with the Federal Election Commission against candidate Aisha Wahab and the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee.

Miley alleges that Wahab improperly used money from her state Senate campaign to indirectly benefit her congressional campaign through the Alameda County Democratic Party.

According to the complaint, Wahab’s state Senate committee contributed $60,000 to the county Democratic Party on May 5. About two weeks later, the party’s federal committee began making independent expenditures supporting Wahab’s congressional campaign.

Miley argues that the timing suggests coordination between Wahab, her campaign committees and the county Democratic Party. If the expenditures were coordinated rather than independent, he contends, they would constitute unreported and impermissible in-kind contributions to Wahab’s federal campaign.

—But Miley’s complaint relies largely on the timing and pattern of the transactions to infer coordination. It does not present direct evidence showing that Wahab instructed or requested that the Democratic Party spend the money supporting her congressional campaign.

The Alameda County Democratic Party endorsed Wahab in January in the race to replace disgraced former Rep. Eric Swalwell.

Miley’s decision to bring the federal complaint raises questions about his own relationship with the local Democratic Party and threatens to deepen divisions already exposed by the increasingly acrimonious special election between Wahab and Melissa Hernandez.

Those tensions have intensified amid record-breaking spending by AIPAC-aligned groups and a steady barrage of negative advertising against Wahab. The outside spending and Hernandez’s aggressive campaign have increasingly alienated her from some local Democratic Party leaders and activists. Hernandez has been an elected member of the county Democratic Central Committee since 2024.

Igor Tregub, chair of the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee, did not immediately comment on the allegations but said he is reviewing Miley’s complaint.

—The episode could also carry longer-term political consequences for Miley.

Miley has enjoyed the Alameda County Democratic Party’s endorsement throughout much of his political career, even as his positions on policing and other issues have sometimes put him at odds with the progressive central committee.

Now, by asking federal regulators to investigate the local Democratic Party itself, Miley risks further damaging that relationship as he approaches what could be a final campaign for county supervisor in 2028.
