Hear ye! Hear ye!

We’ve got a ton of events coming up the next few months! Come join us as we have a blast building community and trying, in our own small ways, to change the world.

Details:

  • Date: Tuesday, July 14th

  • Time: 6pm - 9pm

  • Location: 454 W Division St, Chicago, IL 60610, USA - In the community room.

  • Luma Sign-up Link: https://luma.com/hte2o3ns

Description:

What is intelligence—and how did it evolve into the complex systems we see today, including AI?

Join us for a discussion of A Brief History of Intelligence by Max Bennett, which explores how learning, decision-making, and cognition emerged over time, from simple organisms to humans and modern artificial systems.

While anyone is welcome, we’ll frame part of the conversation through an effective altruism lens, including:

  • What this implies about the future of AI

  • How to think about moral patienthood (which beings matter morally)

  • Whether there are overlooked opportunities to do good related to animal or artificial minds

Whether you’ve read the whole book or just want to engage with the ideas, come join a thoughtful, EA-focused discussion.

This event takes place in an apartment community room. Doors open at 6 but discussion likely won’t start until 7. We will have snacks and drinks! If any questions, please reach out to effectivealtruismchicago@gmail.com

Details:

  • Date: Sunday, July 19th

  • Time: 1pm - 5pm, with the potential to go later.

  • Location: Demera Restuarnt, 4801 N. Broadway Street, Chicago, IL 60640. Weather permitting we will be eating outside on their shaded terrace.

  • Luma Sign-up Link: https://luma.com/uhgkhgwi

Description:

Ethiopian food relies heavily on vegetables. Demera takes this tradition seriously (and cheaply). We’ll get some rounds of vegan Ethiopian food, drinks, chit chat, and enjoy the weather.

This was formerly the Navigator Taproom social. However, it recently closed permanently so we’ve had to adjust locations. Everything else stays the same!

Details:

  • Date: Sunday, July 31st

  • Time: 6pm - 9pm, with the potential to go later.

  • Location: Rossi's River North, 412 N State St, Chicago, IL 60654. We’ll be near the windows that look out on State Street.

  • Luma Sign-up Link: https://luma.com/e09te989

Description:

Formerly this was the Navigator Taproom Social. But then Navigator taproom closed, so now we’re doing it Rossi’s. BEcause who doesn’t love a dive bar.

Come enjoy some drinks with your fellow co-ideologists! We’ll have excellent beer and even more excellent conversation conversation. We’ll be a relatively large group sitting together near the windows that face out to State.

Hope to see you there!

Details:

  • Date: Saturday, August 15th

  • Time: 5:30pm - 10:30pm, with the potential to go later.

  • Location: Ohio Street Beach and the neighboring Jane Addams Memorial Park. I’ll let you know more when I arrive at 5pm and see where other groups are.

Description:

This is a rescheduled event from July.

We’re trying something new: a lakefront social. We’ve found a lovely and secluded spot - with easy access to the Belmont station. We’ll have drinks, food, blankets, and company. With trees, grass, and an almost beach, we’ll have a blast while enjoying Chicago’s lake. While swimming is an option, it will not be obligatory (obviously). Plenty of people, including me, won’t dive in, but many will. As the sun sets we’ll be able to enjoy the fireworks in the right over us (the barge should be less than 200 feet away).
