EA België December Nieuwsbrief

2024 loopt op zijn einde. Iedereen bij EA België wenst jullie fijne feestdagen en een geweldig nieuw jaar!

Het was een goed jaar voor onze community—nog nooit waren we zo actief! Met 23 evenementen (tegenover 16 in 2023) en veel nieuwe gezichten, is het inspirerend om te zien hoe hard we gegroeid zijn. Een enorme dankjewel aan iedereen die onze evenementen bijwoonde en als vrijwilliger hielp!

We zijn ook enthousiast over de lancering van Effectief Geven, een nieuw initiatief rond effectief doneren in België, dat al mooie aandacht in de media heeft gekregen.

Nu het jaar bijna voorbij is, overwegen velen van ons hoe we het meeste impact kunnen maken met onze eindejaarsdonaties. Twijfel je nog waar je wilt geven? Bekijk dan de lijst van de beste goede doelen in 2024 volgens Giving What We Can. Voor informatie over fiscaal aftrekbare donaties in België kun je terecht op onze website of bij Effectief Geven.

Dit is onze laatste nieuwsbrief in het Nederlands. Maar geen zorgen: voortaan vind je bovenaan onze e-mails een knop om de nieuwsbrief te vertalen. We raden je ook aan om lid te worden van de EA Vlaanderen-groepschat in onze WhatsApp-community, waar je nog steeds gesprekken in het Nederlands kunt voeren. Voel je vrij om jezelf daar voor te stellen! Vergeet ook niet om je in te schrijven voor de nieuwsbrief van Effectief Geven, die wél in het Nederlands blijft verschijnen.

📖 EA Book+ Discussion: The Righteous Mind

Neem deel aan een discussie over The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion van Jonathan Haidt. Het boek onderzoekt de morele fundamenten achter onze overtuigingen en gedragingen. Hoe beïnvloeden onze morele intuïties onze aanpak om goed te doen? Kunnen deze inzichten de EA-gemeenschap inclusiever maken of leiden ze ons juist af van evidence-based prioriteiten?

Jaarlijkse EA-enquête
Rethink Priorities organiseert de jaarlijkse EA-enquête. Deze enquête helpt om de acties, waarden, demografie en ideeën binnen de globale EA-community beter te begrijpen. De resultaten worden gebruikt om het werk van verschillende EA-organisaties te helpen. Invullen kan hier.

Effectief Geven Cadeaukaart
Effectief Geven biedt nu cadeaukaarten aan bij donaties via hun platform. Een leuke manier om iemand te introduceren in de wereld van altruïsme! Meer info vind je hier: https://www.effectiefgeven.be/blog/cadeaukaart-24

Ethiek Revolutie

Zoals vermeld in onze vorige nieuwsbrief, zullen Mathieu Spillebeen (Effectief Geven) en Jeroen Willems (EA België) aanwezig zijn op het Ethiek Revolutie e-festival in februari. Meer informatie over hun talks en gratis registratie vind je hier: https://ethiekrevolutie.nl/er-gratis-kaartje/

🏛️ Op zoek om een verschil te maken met een carrière in beleid? Doe mee met de nieuwe Impactful Policy Careers accelerator, ontworpen om jou te empoweren om impactvolle veranderingen in het Europese beleid te stimuleren en een betere toekomst vorm te geven. Breng een week door in Brussel met 20 ambitieuze veranderaars om de vaardigheden, kennis en netwerken te ontwikkelen die nodig zijn om duurzame voedselsystemen via beleid te transformeren. 🌍 Transnational Giving Europe (TGE) is op zoek naar een afgestudeerde in Europese of Internationale Politiek voor een betaalde stage van 6 maanden, die zo snel mogelijk kan starten in Brussel.

TGE faciliteert grensoverschrijdende donaties met belastingvoordeel, zodat Europese burgers effectief kunnen doneren aan goede doelen zoals de Against Malaria Foundation en GiveDirectly. Solliciteer hier.

🔊 De International Conference on Large-Scale AI Risks vindt plaats van 26-28 mei 2025 aan het Instituut voor Filosofie van de KU Leuven in België.

Keynote sprekers op de conferentie zijn:

• Yoshua Bengio – Professor aan de Université de Montréal

• Dawn Song – Professor aan UC Berkeley

• Iason Gabriel – Senior Staff Research Scientist bij Google DeepMind

Deelnemers uit een breed scala aan academische disciplines worden uitgenodigd om abstracts in te dienen over hun werk met betrekking tot grootschalige risico’s van AI. Abstracts kunnen per e-mail worden gestuurd naar existentialrisk@kuleuven.be, uiterlijk op 15 februari 2025.

2024 is coming to an end, and all of us at EA Belgium want to wish you happy holidays and a wonderful new year!

This has been a great year for our community—we’ve never been this active before! With 23 events (compared to 16 in 2023) and lots of new faces joining us, it’s been inspiring to see how much we’ve grown. A huge thank-you to everyone who attended our events and volunteered!

We’re also excited about the launch of Effectief Geven, a new effective giving initiative here in Belgium, which has already received some well-deserved media attention.

As we reflect on the year, many of us are also considering how we can do the most good with our year-end donations. If you're still deciding where to give, check out Giving What We Can’s list of the best charities to donate to in 2024. Join us for a discussion about The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt. This thought-provoking book explores the moral foundations that shape our beliefs and behaviours, offering a framework for understanding why people with differing worldviews often clash. How do our moral intuitions influence our approach to doing good? Are these instincts helpful, or do they sometimes mislead us when prioritising causes? Could recognising these moral differences make the EA community more inclusive, or might it risk diluting its focus on evidence and impact?

Yearly EA Survey

Rethink Priorities is conducting the yearly EA survey. This survey is used to better understand the actions, values, demographics, and ideas of the global EA community, and will be used by a number of effective altruist organizations to help inform their work. Have your say and fill it out here.

Ethiek Revolutie

As mentioned in our previous newsletter, Mathieu Spillebeen (Effectief Geven) and Jeroen Willems (EA Belgium) will be speaking at the Ethiek Revolutie e-festival in February.
