A new report by Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z), titled "Assessment of the Civic Space in Zambia: Legal Gaps and Incidences of Infringement." examines concerns over freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom of association and citizen participation in public affairs.
It highlights allegations of restrictions on civic activities, selective enforcement of laws and obstacles faced by civil society organizations, political actors and the media.
Recent assessments by CIVICUS and other democracy watchdogs have pointed to growing constraints on civic space in Zambia ahead of the vote.
The government and its supporters, however, argue that important democratic reforms have been implemented since 2021, including measures to improve transparency, strengthen oversight institutions and expand access to information.
