How dangerous are Kenya’s political gangs?

So-called political gangs or "goons" have come into focus as Kenya prepares for its next general election in August 2027.

Human rights organizations, political analysts and civil society groups have raised concerns that politicians across the political divide are using gangs to intimidate opponents, disrupt public gatherings and influence political narratives.  

There have been recent incidents involving such disruptions. The use of hired gangs during periods of political competition is not new in Kenya. However, observers say the phenomenon appears to be becoming more visible as political  alliances shift ahead of the next vote.
