I am pleased to (finally) announce the launch of our podcast: The Durant Rant’s Deep Dive Docket (I reserve the right to change the title and branding multiple times until I get this right).
Why a podcast?
Long-time friends and followers will know that I tend to get distracted by matters of interest to the legal profession and, increasingly, matters of interest to society more generally. Increasingly, I am finding that there is a lack of places where people can feel comfortable openly debating and discussing important but controversial topics. I would like to create such a place here.
First Episode
Our first episode is a conversation with Professor Adam Dodek on the Rule of Law. Professor Adam Dodek is a former dean of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law (Common Law Section) and is currently a full professor at the university. He recently published the book “Constitutional Challengers: The Heroes, Villains, and Crusaders Behind Canada’s biggest Cases.” I reached out to Professor Dodek to record this podcast several weeks ago when I was seeing a significant number of court cases out of the United States where judges were making troubling comments about the Federal Government’s failure to abide by various court orders in immigration cases. In this first episode we discuss the rule of law, the status of the rule of law in Canada and the United States as well as efforts that can be taken to strengthen the rule of law.
I thank Professor Dodek for this time and for agreeing to be my first guest. I hope you enjoy the conversation.
Upcoming Episodes
The first season will have around 10 episodes. The second episode will be available later this week. That one is literally just me ranting about the various problems with governments across the country routinely utilizing omnibus legislation.
Upcoming episodes will cover the following topics:
AI, Society and the Practice of Law.
Litigating in the Public Interest: How can lawyers manage intimidation and personal attacks?
Mental Health and Wellness in the Legal Profession: A discussion with Tim Culbert of the Wellness Docket.
Lawful Access and Data Privacy (I need to find a guest for this show if anyone has any suggestions. I think I might want to interview both a practicing criminal defence lawyer, an academic and possibly a law enforcement official together).
Law Firm Partnership Admission Diversity Data.
Thank you to Nick Robinson
I would like to thank Durant Barristers’ Summer Student and University of Ottawa law school graduate Nick Robinson for his help getting this show off the ground. Nick will also be my co-host for as long as he wishes to be my co-host. However, Nick has secured his articles with a wonderful Toronto-based litigation firm and I expect I will lose him to his litigation files before long.
I am very grateful that Nick is here to help me launch this initiative. In addition to Substack, the podcast will also soon be live on both Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Advertising
The first few episodes are being released without any advertising. However, if you would be interested in advertising on the podcast, do get in touch. I am likely to sell advertising beginning with episode 4 once I collect some data about who is actually listening to this show other than my parents.
