If you write anything with Claude, you may have seen the headlines this week. Claude is now watermarking every word it writes.
Cue the internet losing its dang mind.
Here’s what happened:
On August 2, the EU started requiring AI companies to mark AI-generated content in a way machines can read. Anthropic (the maker of Claude) signed on, along with about 190 other companies, so ChatGPT and Gemini are heading the same direction. The mark is invisible.
Three things it does NOT do:
It doesn’t tell anyone your name, your business, or which chat it came from.
It doesn’t change who owns your content. It’s still yours.
It doesn’t touch your Google rankings. Google isn’t part of this, and Google has never penalized a page for being written with AI. Google penalizes unhelpful pages, which is a completely different thing.
The big question: Could someone just rewrite the text to hide the watermark?
Anthropic said it’s possible, but “light editing probably won’t remove the watermark completely,” while “a complete rewrite where every word is replaced will.”
Well in my opinion, if you are completely re-writing your content than what’s the point of using Claude to help you be more efficient?
So if you plan to keep writing with AI— which we do btw— than read this:
In other words, keep doing what you are doing. Everything is going to be just fine.
