Remember when we used to buy software on physical media for a fixed price and we’d own that software forever? There were no subscription fees or hidden costs, no ads, and the apps didn’t spy on us. Times have changed, but demand for old-school software remains, particularly among gamers as evidenced by the recent Stop Killing Games movement which has gathered considerable momentum.

A couple of decades ago I had a large collection of video games for the Master System, Playstation 1, Xbox, N64, Game Cube, and Xbox 360. Unfortunately, they were stolen from my garage a few years ago. These days, despite spending more than ever on software, I no longer feel like I actually own anything. And if you think about it, I don’t. Most modern software is leased, not owned.
