Here are my 5 selections for the month:

#Soulful House

Fresh out of the oven: Musclecars take Louie Vega and Tony Momrelle’s “Touch The Sky” and let it run for more than ten minutes. Loose percussion, pianos and synths move around Momrelle’s vocal as the arrangement keeps opening up. This is what an extended mix should do: give the floor time to settle in and keep the song alive all the way through.

#Deep House #Breaks #Downtempo #Experimental #Ambient

Marco Bosco recorded the original Metalmadeira in 1983 on eight channels, without a click or metronome. When Alter Disco returned to it four decades later, the tapes were damaged, so they had to work from the finished stereo recordings. The reworks bring Bosco’s naturally drifting percussion together with drum machines and beats, alongside vocoder and atmospheric synths. Metalmadeira II brings a Brazilian electronic experiment onto today’s dance floor without sanding off what made it unique.

#Soul-Jazz #Post Bop

Pharoah Sanders could make a saxophone sound like hope. On these sessions with Bay Area pianist Ed Kelly, even his roughest cries carry warmth, while Kelly’s playing gives the music a calm centre. The record originally appeared as Ed Kelly & Friend because Sanders was under contract elsewhere, although nobody familiar with that horn could have mistaken the friend. Two musicians making the room feel a little brighter.

#Jazz Fusion

My uncle and cousins visited this week. It was my uncle’s first time at my place, so I asked him to choose one of the records he and my dad used to listen to. He went straight for Touchdown.

It opens with “Angela”—also the name of my love. A beautiful coincidence for a track that conveys tenderness, nostalgia and all sorts of emotions without a single vocal.

#Ambient

Tokyo producer aus sends soft electronic sketches; Ken-ichiro Isoda answers from Hachijo Island with piano, winds, harp and acoustic details. Interwoven unfolds like that conversation—quiet, spacious and full of small sounds that reveal themselves slowly. The right record for letting the weekend leave your system.
