Wednesday War Room Premium: Oregon’s roster squeeze has begun

There is a stage of fall camp when depth becomes almost intoxicating. Every young player who flashes creates another possibility, every veteran who can move between positions gives the staff another answer, and coaches can talk about eight offensive linemen, a deep defensive-front rotation, multiple STAR candidates and three quarterbacks behind an established starter without immediately confronting the less comfortable part of roster construction.

Eventually, all those possibilities need repetitions, and repetitions are finite. That is why Dan Lanning’s comments following Oregon’s first fall scrimmage were more consequential than another August reminder that competition matters. Oregon went through approximately 120 plays before Lanning explained that every player would eventually be judged through two questions.

“Are you accountable and are you capable?” Lanning said. “Do you do your job when you’re asked to do your job and are you capable of doing the job we ask you to do?”

The consequence followed immediately.

“If you’re not, then you’re going to get limited reps,” Lanning said. “If you do, then you’ll continue to grow on this team.”

That changes the nature of fall camp. Oregon began August trying to discover how many players could help, but the next stage requires deciding how much each one gets to help. The competition has not ended. It has simply reached the point where winning it begins carrying something tangible.
