This story follows on from the discovery that my mother’s paternal grandmother, Lena Tolchinsky (nee Matlin), had a large family who was spread out in the North Eastern United States, Canada, and England. I had been surprised that they weren’t all “New Yorkers.” If you haven’t read that part of the story yet you might want to read that before this section:
My mother never even knew her paternal grandfather’s name and just assumed he had died when my grandfather was very young. Starting with zero, I decided to track him down and find out if he was alone in New York or if he had family in America as well.

I’m still down in the rabbit hole of ancestry research. Instead of trying to see how many generations back in time I can trace through birth, death, and marriage records, I’m trying to figure out the stories of some of my immigrant ancestors. This is part 1 of the story of Harry and Lena Tolchinksy, my mother’s paternal grandparents.
