In this video, Caro Freire and I continue the conversation begun in last week’s Substack post about how prescription medications and recreational substances may affect sexual functioning. In just 12½ minutes, we cover eight common medications and substances—including antidepressants, antihistamines, blood-pressure medications, opioids, erectile-dysfunction drugs, alcohol, MDMA, and cannabis—and explain what changes to notice.
The important question is not simply, “Is this drug good or bad for sex?” A substance may increase desire or sensuality while making erection, lubrication, ejaculation, or orgasm more difficult.
These effects are not trivial. They can affect intimacy, self-esteem, relationships, and quality of life. People may wonder, “What is wrong with me?” or blame a partner when a medication may be contributing to the change.
Please do not stop taking a prescribed medication. Instead, notice whether your sexual functioning changed after beginning a medication and discuss the change with your physician.
