Folks, I missed you all this last week AND I’m also super grateful that my family and I were able to take a vacation. The kiddos are growing up super fast and it was precious to be able to spend time at the beach with them and their dad.
I posted this pic on Substack earlier today and invited folks to name the place. Kudos to Tee Ree who got it right — we were in the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina. Or as she described it colorfully, “NC where Blackbeard ran the Queen Anne’s Revenge aground.”
My family has spent many a summer week in the OBX and it’s become a familiar, happy place for us. This year, my son (13yo) proclaimed that he wanted to spend more time learning the area’s history, so of course we obliged. We visited multiple maritime museums. The coolest thing was when he said he wished there was a Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and voilà… it felt like he willed it into existence. If you’re going to be near Hatteras, NC, I recommend dropping in for a visit! The most interesting thing I learned about during our trip was the history of German U-Boat attacks on the OBX (and other parts of the United States’ Atlantic coastline) in WWI & WWII. Pretty fascinating stuff.
Now we’re back safely in northern Virginia and I’m excited to get back to work for y’all with more great podcasts here on The Debrief.

One of the most shockingly under-reported stories of Donald Trump’s second term is the military occupation of America’s capital city. One year ago, Trump deployed National Guard troops to Washington, DC, under the false pretext of a “crime emergency.” Today, that deployment has grown to roughly 5,000 troops — and the Pentagon recently asserted that the National Guard deployment will continue until Inauguration Day 2029. If you’re not hearing alarm bells, you should be.
I recently had the opportunity to hear Keya Chatterjee, the Executive Director of Free DC, speak about the occupation. She did a phenomenal job connecting the dots to the broader struggle for American democracy — a key topic for us here on The Debrief. Even as a resident of the DC region (or as we call it here, the DMV), I learned quite a bit. DC’s occupation is something every American needs to understand, so we’re going to dive into the topic with the brave woman leading the fight for DC’s freedom.
