Debra Shushan, Becca Strober · The Debrief with Debra Shushan

Becca Strober returned to The Debrief to speak about Protect the Harvest, an initiative developed with Palestinian partners, to protect the fall olive harvest in the West Bank from Israeli state-backed settler violence.

The topics we spoke about included:

  • The emergency on the ground in the West Bank: Becca detailed how state-backed settler violence is continually escalating, extremist settlers have formed armed militias, and Palestinians are being displaced from their villages

  • The olive harvest: Why it is important to the West Bank Palestinian economy and vital for Palestinian farming families, as well as central to Palestinian heritage, and how violent settlers have been rendering it increasingly impossible

  • Protect the Harvest: How it was developed with Palestinian partners, why protective presence is essential, who can participate in the one-week trips this fall, and how to support the mission.

Thanks to those who donated to Protect the Harvest during our live podcast.

    You folks are amazing!

  • Risk awareness and training: Potential for denial of entry and deportation, risk of violence and training on deescalation, and preparing for likely scenarios (e.g. social media searches)

  • Arrest of Yinon Levi: Reaction to the arrest and impending trial of settler ringleader Yinon Levi, who was filmed killing Becca’s friend Awdah Hathaleen, the high-profile Palestinian activist

Below, you can watch Becca’s inaugural appearance on The Debrief, which includes their personal story of becoming an activist following service in the Israeli army and joining Breaking the Silence. Miles is the founder of Defiance.org, a NYT bestselling author, and the anonymous writer of a 2018 NYT op-ed on being part of the resistance inside the first Trump administration. In April 2025, claiming that Miles’ actions could be treasonous, Trump issued a presidential memorandum ordering senior staff in his administration to launch an investigation against him.

For those of you who enjoyed my recent conversation with Ami Fields-Meyer, co-author of On Courage: How to Be a Dissident in an Age of Fear — you’ll love this podcast with an American dissident who put his career (and more) on the line to warn Americans about Donald Trump.

We’ve had to reschedule this convo a couple of times, but inshallah, the third time will be the charm!

On September 23, the Arab Center Washington DC will host its annual Palestine Conference — and I’m honored to be among an esteemed group of speakers. In addition to me, you’ll spot several Debrief alums on the list below.

You’re invited to attend in person and it would be fabulous to see DC-area folks there. Attending virtually is also an option.

The event is free — you just need to register in advance. Learn more, check out the event schedule, and register here.

That’s it for now!

Thanks, as always, for your support and being part of The Debrief’s wonderful and growing community.

Warm regards,

Debra
