The last of the Celeste fig (Ficus carica) cuttings set to root last fall are potted now. Some of them will be going out to friends shortly. Barring a disaster like hail or deer, this year should yield our biggest fig crop yet.
I’m in process of setting some Brown Turkey cuttings now. They will be ready to pot by next spring. The plan is to eventually move our fig trees and establish a new grove up on the hill behind the house.
Raw figs have a relatively short shelf life as they must be picked ripe, but they make delicious preserves, and they can be kept frozen. The Main Muse and I drop them in salads or eat them with icecream. A frozen fig can be a treat all by itself on a hot August afternoon.
