One of the thrills of reaching one’s eighties is having outgrown being a grownup. You begin to be surprised again, to be infected with wonder at small things, to discover. Two delicious discoveries this summer have been Bear Creek Tomatoes, which are among the tastiest tomatoes I have encountered, and Tromboncino Squash, which is the most delicious squash I have ever eaten. Tender, sweet, nutty. The vines don’t wilt in the heat like zucchini. It is indeed a wonder.
I sowed a bed of mesclun back in the spring and pulled out two little squashy looking sprouts that emerged in the mix. I nearly threw them away but was curious to see what they would make. Turns out they make a lot of fine squash. We cooked our first one for supper. It was a revelation.
The vines are great climbers. Next year, I’ll make a trellis.
Walk in hope-
