In 2007, researchers in Perth, Australia, recruited women in their seventies for one of the longest protein trials ever run. The idea was simple. Aging muscle loses protein, so giving it more should slow the loss. They ran the trial for two years, double-blinded, with every participant drinking a protein shake each morning. Urine testing confirmed the extra protein was getting in.
Nothing changed. Muscle mass, grip strength, lower-limb strength, and the timed get-up-and-walk test were no different than the control group. The women drinking protein deteriorated at the same rate as the women drinking the placebo.
Nobody expected seventy-five-year-olds to bulk up. The surprise was that the supplement did not even slow the decline. These women were healthy and already eating above the government protein recommendation. Adding 20 more grams per day, confirmed by lab measurement, did nothing. They were not short on protein. They were short on something else.
