We are just a few weeks away from our youngest daughter heading to college! We’re happy she was accepted into Texas A&M University, which was her first choice.
Am I sad the kids are growing up and taking control of their day-to-day decisions?
Nope! Not at all!
I guess I will always miss the family time we shared when they were little. We’ve done so much together, and those memories are still mostly front-of-mind.
That is where I want them to stay!
Do Now Mindset
My wife Dulce and I have mostly taken the “do now” attitude in life. She and I still laugh (sort of) about our first trip to Europe where we visited Italy on a 15-day bus tour.
We took this route because it was the cheapest. Once we arrived in Rome, most of the trip was planned, including many of the meals.
However, there were a couple of free afternoons or evenings when we were given free time, and this is when we faced the reality of our bank account.
To keep this story short, let’s just say that she and I shared many of the meals so we could stay in the black!
I often hear people say things like …
“We’re going to plan a vacation two years from today. If everything works out, we are going.”
“I’ve had enough with this job! I’m going to enroll in a university program so I can start a new career.”
“I’m scared of the medical report my doctor shared with me. My game plan is to start eating better and to join the gym.”
The talk is great! It’s now time to do something about it.
The fact is that the good stuff life has to offer requires sacrifices. We must be ready to do the work. We cannot wait for the perfect situation to present itself. In most cases, we need to create the new reality we want in life.
No Finish Line
As I ponder our situation with the kids moving along in life, I’ve taken the attitude that there is no finish line in sight.
Given I am unaware of the exact date and time the Lord will call me home, I need to focus on doing stuff now.
Does this mean I might spend a few more dollars here and there? Yup!
Does it mean some decisions will fail to work out as planned? Yup!
The good thing is that my wife and I are on the same page … Let’s spend as much time as we can together and get the kids involved when they are available.
It’s really that simple!
As I look into the future, I am excited about what I see. There will undoubtedly be bumps along the road, but they are much easier to overcome when we are tackling life on our terms.
