I was reading the Parable of the Talents a few days ago and caught myself doing something I’d never noticed before. I’ve read that passage more times than I could count, yet this time I realized I’d quietly added something to the story that isn’t actually there. In my mind, the servant with two talents had always been standing beside the servant with five, wondering why he’d been given less. It seemed so obvious that I never thought to question it. Then I went back and read the passage again. The servant never says that. Nobody says that. The comparison I’d been carrying around for years wasn’t in the parable at all. It was something I had brought with me.
