Not everything worth knowing is about what to cut out.

Sometimes it’s about what to add.

There’s a drink that’s delicious enough to pass as dessert, backed by real research into both erectile function and cardiovascular health, and it’s about as far from a pharmaceutical as you can get.

Organic, simple, and easy to find.

Some call it liquid black. And the story behind it is more interesting than you’d expect.

In the 1990s, researchers studying the Kuna people of Central America noticed something unusual.

Despite eating diets high in salt and having smoking rates similar to the general population, the Kuna had remarkably low rates of hypertension and heart disease as they aged.

Genetics didn’t explain it. Lifestyle largely matched what researchers expected to see elsewhere.

The one clear difference was that the Kuna consumed large amounts of flavanol-rich cocoa daily, several cups worth, as a regular part of their diet.

That observation helped kick off decades of research into cocoa flavanols and cardiovascular health, research that eventually connected directly to erectile function as well.

Erections depend entirely on blood flow. The penis has no special mechanism separate from the rest of the cardiovascular system.

Blood is pumped from the heart, through the arteries, into the erectile tissue.

Which means anything that damages cardiovascular health damages erectile function too, and usually shows up there first.

As men age, and as testosterone naturally declines, several things happen at once:

  • Blood flow to erectile tissue tends to decrease

  • Blood vessels lose some of their elasticity

  • Nitric oxide production drops

  • Erectile tissue itself can begin to atrophy over time

Every one of those factors is influenced by the same underlying system, and that system responds directly to flavanol intake.

Every blood vessel in the body is lined with endothelium, the specialized tissue responsible for producing nitric oxide and controlling how well vessels expand and contract.

Healthy, youthful blood vessels expand and constrict easily. Aging or damaged blood vessels lose that flexibility.

And endothelial dysfunction, when this system stops working properly, is one of the earliest measurable signs of cardiovascular decline. It often shows up in erectile function before it shows up anywhere else.

What the studies found:

  • A study of 15 healthy subjects found measurable improvements in blood flow within one to four hours of drinking flavanol-rich cocoa, comparable to nitrate-rich foods like beetroot

  • A separate study following 21 subjects over two weeks found consistent improvements in blood flow measured directly in the artery

  • Flavanol-rich cocoa has also been shown to improve vessel dilation even in smokers, a population where ED is typically harder to treat due to endothelial damage from smoking

The most striking finding worth flagging clearly:

A small pilot study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine followed 101 men with erectile dysfunction, split into mild, moderate, and severe groups. Each man drank a cup of cocoa combined with chili and spices nightly for 12 weeks.

Using a standardized erectile function questionnaire:

  • Men with mild ED showed a 79% improvement in scores

  • Men with moderate ED showed 83% improvement

  • Men with severe ED showed 67% improvement

Worth being honest about the limits here: this was a small, uncontrolled study without a placebo comparison group, and the drink combined cocoa with chili and spices rather than testing cocoa in isolation.

That means we can’t say with certainty how much of the effect came from the cocoa specifically.

But the direction and consistency of the finding lines up with everything else known about flavanols and vascular health, which makes it a genuinely interesting result rather than an outlier to dismiss.

Worth Remembering: The benefits of flavanol-rich cocoa have also been studied in men with far more serious conditions, including uncontrolled diabetes, kidney disease, congestive heart failure, and existing cardiovascular disease.

Across that research, the pattern holds consistently: measurable improvement in blood flow.

This is the part that trips most people up.

Cocoa beans are naturally rich in flavonoids, and the compounds responsible for cocoa’s health benefits, proanthocyanidins, are also what makes raw cocoa taste bitter.

Commercial chocolate processing destroys much of that:

  • Heating, alkalizing, and refining strips out a significant portion of the flavanol content

  • High fructose corn syrup and emulsifiers get added to keep it smooth and sweet

  • Those additives actively work against vascular health

A bar of milk chocolate ends up doing almost nothing for you in this regard.

What you actually want is raw or minimally processed high-flavanol cocoa powder, not drinking chocolate, not a chocolate bar, and not anything with added sugar syrup.

Ingredients:

  • 1 to 2 tablespoons high-flavanol raw cocoa powder

  • 1 cup warm water (not boiling)

  • 1 teaspoon raw, unpasteurized honey

Instructions:

  1. Heat water until warm, not scalding

  2. Add the cocoa powder and stir until fully dissolved

  3. Stir in the raw honey

  4. Drink warm

If you’re sensitive to caffeine and find that it makes your heart race or causes nausea, start with half a scoop of cocoa rather than the full amount, since cocoa does contain some natural stimulant compounds.

Too much can also cause anxiety in sensitive individuals, so pay attention to how your own body responds rather than assuming a fixed dose works for everyone.

Liquid black is a genuinely solid daily habit, but it works on a cumulative timeline. Days and weeks, not minutes.

If you want something faster-acting, or you’re looking for an option that pairs immediate erection support with the same long-term vascular protection discussed above, this is where I’d point you toward BraveRX.

It combines three compounds working through different mechanisms:

  • Tadalafil, a vasodilator that improves blood flow and has been linked in observational research to meaningful reductions in serious health risks over time

  • Apomorphine, which works on the brain’s arousal pathway rather than the vascular system directly

  • Icariin, a natural compound that supports nitric oxide production and blood flow, the same pathway cocoa flavanols work through, just faster and more directly

What the tadalafil research specifically shows:

  • 34% lower risk of all-cause mortality

  • 27% lower risk of major cardiovascular events

  • 34% lower risk of stroke

  • 32% lower risk of dementia

It’s a fully online process, licensed doctor, no waiting room, and it’s the option I’d recommend to anyone who wants both faster erection support and the same longevity-focused vascular protection covered throughout this article.

Important context: this is observational data, meaning it shows association rather than proven cause and effect. The men studied were already prescribed tadalafil for other reasons, and factors like overall healthcare engagement may partly explain the numbers. It’s promising, not definitive.
