It’s orientation season. And with that comes “the welcome,” where designated campus leaders set the tone not only for the orientation experience, but for the relationship students and their families will have with the institution itself.
As an experienced public speaker, instructor of public speaking, and stand-up comedian, to say I have opinions about how to deliver “the welcome” is an understatement. While ‘cringe’ is back, and deserves to be embraced, hack is tiresome and creates distance between the speaker and their audience.
For instance, never start with:
“So, how was traffic?” This will elicit an immediate groan from beleaguered drivers as they replay the worst moments of their trip to campus.
