A 41 year old female presented to the ER with shortness of breath and vague chest pain. Prior to this she had been feeling “mostly well but fatigued”, but had been recently treated for breast cancer with a lumpectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy and it was believed she had tolerated the treatment well.
Further examination in the ER revealed a temperature of 100.9 F, a WBC count of 17,000/uL (with a predominance of neutrophils). While in the ER she developed hypotension (88/52) and “crashed”. A code blue was started but despite medical intervention she could not be revived.
The family asked for an autopsy to elucidate the cause of death. The following images were taken during the microscopic examination:
