You know how the word “intentionality” has become synonymous with “boring” recently?
I hate that.
Because I am incredibly intentional. I look at things holistically (another overused word now—Jesus, can’t we have anything untouched by wellness girlies? 🫠). I try to write intelligently, carefully curate my online presence so I don’t upset the balance, and refer back to my brand guidelines before anything gets posted. I endlessly refine and simplify and complicate and expand and contract and fuck it, I’m tired.
So I’m setting all that bullshit down for a second and doing a proper introduction. Because my wildest, biggest dream right now is to form a proper squad with all of you delightful weirdos here on Substack.
Hi, I’m Sara, 👋🏻 and honestly, I really dislike most people. Okay maybe that wasn’t the right way to start off here… That’s not exactly true, I know that you guys here are my people, so you’ll get it.
I put a lot of value on intelligence, critical thinking, a willingness to color outside the lines, and being open-minded. I’m also a raging feminist, believe people should be able to marry whoever the fuck they want, and will absolutely rip you a new asshole if you try to tell women and trans folks what to do with their own bodies.
Now that the important stuff is out of the way, I also love: metal music, hoppy-ass beers and filthy dirty martinis, living in the PNW, gardening, tattoos, being childfree (no shade to my mom friends, but the feral neighborhood kids are running circles around my house and through my garden as I write this and I’m about to lose my shit). I’m also a ride-or-die cat lady, and it makes it worse that said neighbor kids are chasing their kitten they “accidentally” let out again. Be so for real. I’m about to catnap that perfect little baby and give it a proper home.
But I digress.
In addition to this publication, Double Kick is also a shop. It’s been many things over the last few years, but these days it’s mostly really fucking rad graphic tees and crewnecks. I’m a graphic designer and creative director by trade, so before I quit my job in 2023 to go freelance, I started designing tees as a fun little side project and it spiraled into *gestures wildly* whatever this is. Intrigued? Check it out.
I also love weird shit like pre-Christian folk practices, historical dramas, gothic romance, and horror movies (except no cheesy, gratuitous gore for me, it’s gotta be intelligent horror, because your girl has standards, okay?). See also: Midsommar, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Game of Thrones, Nosferatu, The King, The Haunting of Hill House, etc. It’s a goal of mine to die with such an amazing collection of horror books that my family and friends fight over it Knives Out style. I’m endlessly intrigued by tarot, I’m a lucid dreamer, and I’m incredibly stubborn. If you tell me to go right because “everyone else did” I will immediately go left.
Lastly, I’m an artist. Underneath all the writing and the design, I’m an abstract oil painter at heart. I’ve been painting my entire life and have no intention of stopping. And yes, my paintings are just as dark and moody as you’d expect.
Now that I’ve dumped all that on you, you’re probably (hopefully?) thinking one of two things:
Um. No thank you, ma’am.
Holy fucking shit I want to be friends with this bitch.
If it’s number two, subscribe and join my squad! I want to be friends with you too!
