For as long as I’ve thought about building Dossia, I was SURE our first product was going to be a sleek, flat lay, Japanese-style, entirely custom, chicly sewn-bound Dossia (aka Journal). That was, until I learnt that we’re SO REVOLUTIONARY (only half sarcastic tbh) that physical printers can’t keep up with our vision. Well they can, but it’ll cost us £500k :)))))))

So what’s the problem? Well, Dossia creates custom dossias - every single page can be curated or customised on our platform and made into a physical (or digital) dossia.

But, doing that in a bound format is reaaaaalllllyy expensive because we’re asking printers to turn on their big ass machines just to print a singular custom book, bind it, package and send it out. While economically great, it also cost a shit ton per book. Or at least it will until we’re averaging about 5000 orders a month - so we’re only… 5000 orders away right now - great! (we’re pre-revenue atm x)

In order to keep moving forward, we’re pivoting to spiral bound Dossias instead. Is it ideal??? Mmm, no. Well, I don’t know. But it’s all we can afford as a bootstrapped company right now, and by moving towards a spiral option, I still get half of my vision: flat lay (check), entirely custom (check), sewn-bound (no check).

Honestly, trying to make spiral notebooks cool/sexy/chic is kind of a fun challenge. As most avid journal fans already know, spiral notebooks have a meh vibe to them in comparison to bound books - but pivots like these are placed in our way to help us grow and (maybe) make something cooler than we ever imagined. So instead of thinking of this as a setback, we’re thinking of this as a challenge, and i’m v excited to take it on.

If you’d have asked people back into the 1600’s what type of transportation they’d want, they would have said a faster horse, not a car. So I’m applying that logic to this new journey.

Yes, we’re gonna make fetch happen.
