There’s a person who isn’t on the Call Sheet but everyone wishes they’d hired sooner: the Producer’s Consultant.
If you’ve never heard the term, don’t worry, most first-time filmmakers haven’t either. They’ve heard of directors, producers, and that one guy who somehow always knows where the craft services table is. But the Producer’s Consultant? That’s the industry’s best kept secret, and to be honest, it shouldn’t be a secret at all.
So What Exactly Is a Producer’s Consultant?
A Producer’s Consultant, sometimes called a Consulting Producer, offers strategic input on nearly every part of a production. That includes script development, casting decisions, budgeting, and overall project management. They work closely with lead producers and directors to provide insight and help solve problems before those problems turn into 2 a.m. panic calls.
Think of them as the person who has already made every mistake so you don’t have to. They’ve been on set when the weather ruined the shoot day. They’ve watched a budget fall apart because nobody planned for insurance. They’ve seen a first-time director burn through their entire cast budget on one actor’s agent fee. A good consultant has scars, and those scars are exactly what you’re paying for.
Unlike a line producer or a UPM, a consulting producer usually isn’t embedded in your production day to day. They’re more like a guide who parachutes in at key moments, or stays on call throughout, to keep you pointed in the right direction. They’re not trying to take over your vision or steal your director’s chair. Their job is to help you make the film you set out to make, minus the unnecessary trauma.
