You had it in the calendar. The walk. The workout. The breathing session. The thing you promised yourself you’d do because it works, because you know it works, because the last three times you did it you felt better after.
You didn’t do it.
You didn’t cancel it in a big dramatic way. You didn’t decide against it. You just, at some point, drifted past it. You told yourself you’d do it later. Later turned into after dinner. After dinner turned into tomorrow. Tomorrow, honestly, is going to be the same story unless you look at the small moment when it slipped.
The small moment goes like this. You approach the time on the calendar. Your body reads the calendar entry. And a very quiet voice, barely a voice, more like a shift, says not today. Not with any particular reason. Just, not today.
You listen to the voice, because it doesn’t feel like a decision. It feels like the truth about what your body wants.
It is not the truth about what your body wants. It is a pattern that runs when the body would otherwise have to do the thing that would help. The pattern has been doing this for so long it has learned to sound exactly like you.
Thanks for reading Dominique Ceara! This post is public so feel free to share it.
A client of mine described this perfectly on Day 11 of the masterclass. She had missed two sessions the same day and told herself it was fine, it didn’t matter, she’d do it later. That night she heard the voice in her head: “That’s okay. That’s us. That’s how we do it.” She said it stopped her in place. The voice sounded like her. It was not her. It was the pattern speaking as identity.
The pattern is not what you want. It is what has been running instead of you.
Every practice you skip because you didn’t feel like it is a small vote for the pattern staying in charge. Not because one skipped walk is a big deal. It isn’t. Because the mechanic of the skip is training. Each time you drift past the calendar entry, the body learns that when the pattern says not today, it wins. The pattern gets a little stronger. Your ability to be the one who picks gets a little weaker.
The reverse is also true. Every time you do the thing the pattern said not to do, you train the opposite. Not through force. Through a specific, small ability to feel the not today voice arrive, notice it as the pattern, and choose anyway.
There are usually four versions of the voice. Some tell you you’re too busy, you’ll do it after this thing. Some tell you it’s fine to numb out for the evening instead. Some tell you it’s more important to be there for someone else right now. Some tell you it doesn’t matter that much, this once. Each version sounds like the truth about your day. Each version is the pattern voting for itself.
You are not the version that skipped. You are the one who can hear the pattern’s voice, name it as the pattern, and do the thing anyway.
The voice my client heard on Day 11, “that’s okay, that’s us, that’s how we do it,” is one of four survival patterns: Overdrive, Disconnect, Please, or Avoid. Once you name which one is running you, the voice stops sounding like the truth.
