Diana Jean Schemo · The Long Game: Reporting for Grown-Ups

Syma Solovitch spent 33 years on education policy in California and, before that, as a classroom teacher in New York and Connecticut. A few years go, as everyone went into COVID lockdown, she went back to school herself, setting her sights on a new career. She began training as an educational therapist specializing in dyslexia. It took an intense program of courses in a particularly effective method for teaching dyslexic students, along with practicums and ten videotaped classroom observations. She went from barely passing to a nearly perfect review of her teaching. More importantly, as she succeeded, so did her students. A couple of years in now, she doesn't think about legacy, or about how she’s be remembered in twenty years. She knows a good day through a different lens.
