DIVE IN Beneath the Surface · DIVE IN Beneath the Surface

Stand in the surf and you’ll feel it.

The water rushing up the beach, pulling back toward the ocean. Surface water moving one direction. Bottom water moving another. Your legs telling you one story while your eyes tell you something completely different.

This is undertow. the current that flows beneath the surface in the opposite direction of the visible waves. You can’t see it. You can only feel its resistance when you try to move against it.

The psychology of undertow is about unconscious patterns pulling against conscious intentions.

You say you want to grow your business, but you sabotage every opportunity for visibility. You say you want deep relationships, but you keep everyone at arm’s length. You say you want creative freedom, but you fill your schedule with obligations that leave no space for art.

Surface current moving forward. Bottom current pulling back. And you’re standing in the middle, exhausted from fighting an invisible force.

💭 WONDERING WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE IN REAL LIFE?
Every DIVE IN session is different, but the framework is the same: create conditions where surrender becomes possible. If you're considering a session and want to understand what actually happens—from the moment you arrive to the moment you see your first image - download the preparation guide here.

Here’s what I’m learning about working with undertow instead of against it:

You can’t see your own undertow from the surface. You can only feel the resistance. The projects that never launch. The relationships that never deepen. The changes you commit to that somehow never stick. These aren’t failures of discipline. They’re evidence of invisible currents pulling against your visible intentions.

The first step is recognizing there’s an undertow at all.

Unconscious patterns are just as real as conscious intentions. The undertow isn’t weaker than the surface current. It’s just hidden. And hidden forces are often stronger than visible ones because they operate without your awareness or consent.

Sometimes the undertow knows something the surface current doesn’t. When the two are in conflict, the undertow usually wins. Not because you’re weak, but because unconscious patterns have evolutionary advantages. They operate faster, require less energy, and don’t need your permission.

Fighting undertow exhausts you faster than any amount of hard work. If you’re constantly tired despite not doing that much, you’re probably fighting an invisible current. Your surface says yes to everything. Your undertow says no to most things. The fight between them drains you more than either direction alone ever would.

In DIVE IN sessions, I see undertow constantly.

A mother says she wants candid, authentic images. Surface current. But every time I direct her to relax, to stop posing, to just be with her kids underwater, she stiffens. Smiles harder. Performs more intensely. Undertow pulling against her stated intention.

She’s not lying about what she wants. She genuinely wants authentic images. But there’s an invisible current underneath, maybe fear of judgment, maybe perfectionism, maybe deep conditioning that love requires performance, pulling her back toward control.

I can’t force someone to swim against their undertow. I can only create conditions where the bottom current becomes visible. Where they can feel what they’re fighting and choose whether to keep fighting it or work with it.

Here’s what working with undertow looks like:

Stop moving forward until you understand what’s pulling back. The project you keep not starting. The relationship you keep not deepening. The change you keep not making. These aren’t character flaws. They’re information about invisible resistance.

Your undertow isn’t trying to sabotage you. It’s trying to protect something. Sometimes what it’s protecting needs protecting. Sometimes it doesn’t. But you have to see it before you can decide.

Your turn: Ask yourself, what would I have to give up if this actually worked? That’s usually where the undertow is anchored. The identity you’d lose. The safety you’d sacrifice. The person you’d disappoint. The truth you’d have to face.

This is the question beneath the surface.
