Even with my great intentions to support my dyscalculic daughter the best I could, I made several inaccurate assumptions about my daughter and what she needed to succeed.
Now, 9+ years into our dyscalculia exploration, I can see how wrong and unhelpful my assumptions were.
Here are 5 common, and inaccurate, assumptions I made about my dyscalculic daughter, and that I notice other parents making.
1️⃣ My student would be fine if she would just apply herself and focus.
2️⃣ The school will know how to support my student, I’ll start with them.
3️⃣ Repetition of concepts such as drills, flashcards, worksheets, and memorization should help.
4️⃣ Any math tutor or math program is better than none.
5️⃣ My daughter just needs to make it through math in elementary and middle school and she will be fine.

Bim Blakes Hot Takes is a new book series out by author, Tọlá Okogwu. This first book in the series, Bim Blake’s Hot Takes: My Pencil Case Doesn’t Define Me was recently published and is a fun and relatable read for tweens. The main character hints at her hidden math struggles in this first book, and sets the stage for an important discovery in Book Two, coming next January! Learn more about this series on Tọlá Okogwu’s website.

I’m excited to be speaking at the free Global Math Intervention Summit happening August 6–8, 2026.
My session, “The Parent Perspective of Dyscalculia,” will explore the lived experiences of parents supporting children with dyscalculia, offering insights into bridging the gap between home and school.
The summit brings together leading researchers, educators, and interventionists to discuss practical approaches for students with dyscalculia, ADHD, dyslexia, and persistent math difficulties.
If you’re looking for clearer pathways for math intervention, explicit instruction, cognitive science, and practical strategies you can actually use, I’d encourage you to attend.

I have been writing this monthly dyscalculia newsletter since 2020! Last January I moved it to Substack, a new platform that is more than just a newsletter platform. The Discovering Dyscalculia Substack is a growing resource library on dyscalculia, and a wonderful way to connect with the community.
I am so excited to pour my experience, research, and knowledge on dyscalculia into this Substack space. It seems to be the best fit to share information with you and connect over the dyscalculia journey!
Please consider joining me inside my Substack as a paid subscriber. Your subscription gives you access to a growing library of dyscalculia resources, and a way to connect with me in post comments and live in my Ask-Me-Anything sessions. Right now monthly subscriptions are only $15/month, or pay a once-yearly fee of $150.
