A few weeks ago, I visited the Holy Post studios and sat with Skye Jethani for a conversation about Christianity, American history, and the growing influence of Christian Nationalism in the Evangelical church.
The Holy Post team turned part of our conversation into a 12-minute explainer called “Should America Rededicate Itself to God?”
The explainer video captured only a brief part of our longer conversation, in which Skye and I discussed what America’s founders believed about religious pluralism, how Christians can share biblical convictions while disagreeing about public policy, and why political humility is so important for healthy civic engagement.
And, of course, we also discussed how faith can become distorted when it is tied too closely to coercive power.
In the longer conversation, I shared more of my own journey from being a teenage neo-Nazi skinhead to becoming a pastor. We also talked about why so many pastors struggled to respond as people in their churches were drawn into Christian Nationalism.
