I’ve spent enough time writing parody songs that I’ve come to one conclusion: nothing is sacred. No song is off limits. And if it weren’t for the ever-present possibility of getting deplatformed, there wouldn’t be many topics off limits either.
Last year I wrote a parody of “America the Beautiful” about military wives cheating relentlessly on their husbands while they’re deployed. I’ve put out several versions, and together they’ve picked up millions and millions of views.
The funny part to me isn’t even the song. It’s who gets mad.
Veterans—or at least people claiming to be veterans—almost always think it’s hilarious. They send it to their buddies. They quote lyrics in the comments. They generally seem to have a great time with it.
The people who get upset are civilians. They rush into the comments to explain that I’ve deeply offended veterans.
And then, every so often, I get a woman absolutely furious because I’m perpetuating the stereotype that military wives cheat.
To which I can only think… methinks the lady doth protest too much.
So, for America’s 250th Fourth of July, I figured I’d see what happens if I parody “The Star-Spangled Banner” while revisiting exactly the same subject.
It made me laugh. That’s always my first test.
The second test is whether everyone else laughs… or whether I wake up on the 5th to discover I’ve become an enemy of the state.
